Black Box Projects is delighted to debut a work from Timo Lieber's newest series - Lithium - as part of our Art for Good initiative. In this series the artist continues to explore humanity's impact on the environment in the name of progress.
Whereas previous series have focused on destruction of the planet, in Lithium the artist turns his lens to exploring solutions and documenting the effect alternative energy resources on the landscape. This quest takes Lieber to the Atacama Desert in Chile, a 1,000 kilometre strip of land so devoid of rainfall and life that it doubles as a Martian runway for NASA. This desolate area is a treasure trove of natural minerals and home to 50% of the current global resources of lithium.
Timo Lieber finds inspiration in the brine pools of this Lithium mine, capturing vivid colours and compositions reminiscent of abstract expressionism. The artist finds strange hope within profound ways humankind has altered this uninhabited landscape - it signifies a push for cleaner energy and perhaps a turning point for a new way forward - and translates this through optimistic yellows and vivid celestial blues found in the abstracted works of the Lithium series.
