Adam Jeppesen, Evidence of Absence

Black Box Projects is delighted to present Evidence of Absence by Danish contemporary artist Adam Jeppesen in his first UK solo exhibition from 5 – 17 October 2021 in 4 Cromwell Place, London. Following his iconic Tanks series, Jeppesen’s newest work delves further into the realm of sculpture where concrete, glass and steel are brought together to create towering forms that seem to simultaneously teeter on the brink of collapse whilst also having an imposing and monumental presence. Alongside freestanding and wall-mounted concrete sculptures, the exhibition will also include a series of handmade anthotypes, a photographic process of image-making that uses the light sensitivity of plant materials to produce haunting and ethereal images. Evidence of Absence further explores the themes of transience and memory found throughout the artists oeuvre, while exploring the fragility of human existence and questioning the permanence of modern infrastructures in what is perhaps the Jeppesen’s most ambitious project to date.

Adam Jeppesen is an artist and a traveller. He is best known for his images of remote and rugged landscapes where he celebrates the physical imperfections his long and arduous journeys left on his negatives. Jeppesen's work elevates the imperfect and celebrates the honesty that comes with allowing the imperfection to take centre-stage within his finished pieces. The fragility of photographic materials, the passage of time and the materiality of the photograph as an object are continuing themes that reappear in Jeppesen's oeuvre.

The techniques and printing processes Jeppesen uses are deeply rooted in historic photographic tradition, yet he continues to push the limit and redefine the medium within his practice. In this solo presentation, we see Jeppesen moving away from a strictly photographic practice and instead using concrete to approach continuing themes of time, the imperfect and impact of humanity on a place.

This exhibition also marks the first time Black Box Projects steps away from a strictly photographic offering and presents unique contemporary sculptures alongside photographic works by the artist.

Jeppesen was nominated for the prestigious Deutsche Börse Prize and the KLM Paul Huf Award in 2009, the Prix Pictet in 2016 and is considered one of the greatest talents in contemporary Danish photography. He has exhibited at several international institutions including Foam (Amsterdam), C/O Berlin (Germany), Denver Art Museum (USA) Brandts (Denmark) and The National Museum of Photography (Denmark) as well as having work in their permanent collections. Black Box Projects is the exclusive representative of Adam Jeppesen in the United Kingdom.
