Victoria Marques Pinto: Imminent Impressions: Imminent Impressions
Black Box Projects is delighted to introduce artist Victoria Marques Pinto with her debut solo exhibition in the United Kingdom, Imminent Impressions. Through her mixed-media landscapes, Marques Pinto explores and emphasizes the human impact on the natural world.
The artist's inaugural exhibition re-imagines landscape by incorporating found plastic objects into her mixed-media photographic compositions, giving a permanent and transformative presence in the landscape to the alarming rate of discarded plastic currently polluting the world's oceans. This series involves the artist physically removing plastic pieces found on the shores of her photographic shoots and integrating these discarded plastic objects into her compositions as permanent landmasses. Imminent Impressions is a powerful comment on the landscape we are creating for future generations - and the permanent impact of humanity on our environment - by showing how discarded waste is altering the landscape now and the potential for calamity in the future.
Marques Pinto utilises her art as a vehicle for change by upcycling waste from the sea in her aim to raise awareness and change our relationship to - and our consumption of - waste. The artist skilfully relays her timely message in her palette of bright, fantastical colours and surrealistic mixed-media landscapes. Layering impossibly rich colours of paint onto her large-scale photographs with collage elements of the found plastic, Marques Pinto seeks to question the instability and fragility of our environment and the reality of its current crisis that we continue to create as a by-product of modern life.
The artist's interventions into traditional landscape compositions create strange new realities that are surrealistic in nature, sometimes witty and playful, but always hinting at a greater permanence and perhaps consequence - within her constructed landscapes.
