Please join Black Box Projects in our gallery for a very special reception and In Conversation - featuring artist Liz Nielsen from Brooklyn, New York in discussion with Sarah Allen, Programme Director of the South London Gallery - to celebrate the U.K. launch of the artist's debut monograph, Apparitions. The evening promises a lively discussion surrounded by an exhibition of large scale unique works by Liz Nielsen, chilled bubbly and the company fellow art-minded friends. Join us! 
 
This event is the official unveiling of the artist's long-awaited publication which features over 40 full colour reproductions of unique works by Liz Nielsen created from 2014 - 2021, with new written contributions by Sarah Allen, Head of Programme at the South London Gallery, Martin Barnes, Senior Curator, Photographs at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and Annabel Osberg, freelance journalist for Artforum and the Financial Times, amongst others.
 

Liz Nielsen is an experimental photographer based in Brooklyn and Newburgh, New York. Nielsen's innovative practice upends the traditional method of analogue photography. The artist has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Europe, including solo exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, London, and Paris. Her photograms have been featured at international art fairs such as Paris Photo, Photo London, Sweden's Landskrona Foto, and Unseen Amsterdam. Nielsen has been reviewed in Artforum, The New Yorker, The Guardian, Financial Times, LensCulture, British Vogue, and Foam Magazine, among others. Nielsen's work was part of the J.P. Morgan Curator's Highlights: Pictures-In-Play at Paris Photo Fair 2016 and has works included in the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection. She was an artist-in-residence at the Budapest Art Factory in Budapest, Hungary, in 2016 as well as at the McColl Center of Art + Innovation in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2020. Liz Nielsen received a M.F.A. in Photography at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a B.F.A from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. 

 


Sarah Allen is Head of Programmes at South London Gallery, having previously worked as Assistant Curator, International Art at Tate Modern where she curated exhibitions and displays and researched acquisitions for the collection. She has recently co-curated the major touring survey Zanele Muholi (2020) as well as curating exhibitions and displays from the permanent collection including Nan Goldin (2019), Irving Penn (2019) and David Goldblatt (2019). Further exhibitions include The Shape of Light: 100 Years of Photography and Abstract Art (2018); Sophie Taeuber-Arp (2021) and The Turbine Hall Commission (2022). Before moving to Tate Modern, Allen worked at a string of leading galleries, including The Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, The Guggenheim Museum in New York, and The Photographers' Gallery, London. Among the high-profile photographers she's worked with is Mark Ruwedel, who recently made it on to the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize 2019 shortlist with his show The Artist and Society, curated by Allen.
